My name is Laura Poston and I’m a WordPress developer, consultant, theme customizer, and code tweaker.
I’ve been online for 120 years (well, in dog years), and I’ve been working with WordPress since 2006.. I discovered StudioPress themes years ago and never looked back. I’ve been working with the Genesis framework almost exclusively since its debut in 2010. I bring a sense of humor to my work and find it impossible to work without it.
I have been extremely fortunate to be one of those people who has successfully operated a freelance business. It’s not easy, and the challenges are many. But I made it work, even in the midst of having my home up for sale for a year and a half, building a new house, moving twice in less than a year, and a Derecho.
I have had some wonderful, fun clients over the years (you know who you are!) and thankfully very few “ick” ones. I have also been lucky to meet some great people in the WordPress community. I won’t name names for fear of leaving someone out, but I want to give a special nod to Brian Gardner and the whole StudioPress gang. I am forever grateful to Brian for creating the themes that became the foundation of my business. I’m grateful to all the fun StudioPress mods for making me laugh, for teaching me things, and for encouraging me.
When I started using WordPress way back in 2006, I never imagined that it would become a business. I first hung out my “WordPress Customizer” shingle on January 1, 2009. I wasn’t sure I knew enough, but I heeded the words of other developers on forums like Sitepoint, who warned that you would never feel like you knew enough. At some point, you just have to jump in. I was far from a WordPress expert. I’m far from that today, and I realize that there really isn’t such a thing as an expert. You can learn a boatload of stuff, then wake up the next day and find that half of it has changed. You can’t possibly know it all.
My business has changed over the years as well. In the earlier years of my business, I worked directly with clients. I did everything from lists of small customizations to full custom sites. I worked with my dream designer, and together, she and I created some beautiful and functional sites.
For the past two years, I have been working nearly exclusively with an agency and have become their WordPress specialist. It has been a fantastic arrangement. I’ve always liked being behind the scenes, fiddling with WordPress and such. Now, that’s what I get to spend my time doing. I work with a super designer (waving to Heather) who has also become a dear friend. Life is good!
I still take on projects here and there, and I’m always open to opportunities to use not only my WordPress skills, but my other skills as well.
Drop me a line via my contact form to say “Hi!” I’m always happy to connect with fun, interesting people.
(Just call me Laura J.)!
